Fractured Disappearing Modern 9 Patch (Full Day – Thurs, 1/7/16)
Want to step into modern quilting without ‘pain’? How about a Nine Patch quilt? Nine Patch blocks are so fundamental and easy to make … and they can be modernized in lots of fun ways. The ‘Disappearing 9 Patch’ has become a standard block for modern quilts but we will take it a few steps further. The modern quilt design principles we will practice are asymmetry; neutral space; alternate grid layout and improvisation—cutting without measuring!

Scrappy Improv Block Quilt: Stash Buster & Orphan Block Project (Full Day – Fri, 1/8/16)

What to do with that ever growing pile of scraps and orphan blocks left over from other projects? How about those test blocks that weren’t quite perfect enough to go into your finished quilt? You paid a lot of money for the fabric—why not make those blocks into a quilt! Well, this modern quilt workshop is an easy answer to the stash busting & orphan block problem.
We will start with a fast and easy approach to creating improvisationally pieced blocks. Improvisational piecing is a key modern quilt technique. You’ll leave with a lot of tips for making improvisational blocks that will keep you from worrying about matching everything up. To make it even more fun, you’ll have a chance to trade some scrap fabric with other students to make your blocks even more random! Then, using a provided modern quilt pattern and adding three solid or tone on tone fabrics, you will cut and piece your beautiful improvisational blocks into a modern quilt layout that you can arrange and even re-arrange to suit your style.

Here are some sample improv blocks in progress. I’ll demonstrate several ways to create these blocks in this modern quilt workshop.
