Description

I have used commercially printed African prints in my quilts for many years.  These fabrics are richly colored and employ complex design motifs.  Their vibrancy poses a challenge to quilters who want to make a modern quilt using negative space, minimalism, value and contrast.  In this lecture/trunk show, I start with a summary of the principles of modern quilting. Then, I describe how I have incorporated these vibrant fabrics in a series of AfroModern quilts.   During the lecture, I share many examples of my AfroModern quilts and discuss the design choices that I make.

Topics include:

  • What IS a Modern Quilt?
  • My early explorations using African prints in artquilts
  • Principles of AfroModern design in quilts
  • Adapting and exploring – African prints in modern quilts
  • Tips for selecting companion fabrics—texture, color and value

All lectures are conducted live over Zoom. There will be lots of time for questions and answers. My lecture fee is $550 for events scheduled through 12/31/2024.  I am currently scheduling through 2024.

Contact me below to schedule this lecture. I am happy to accommodate your guild’s time zone, even internationally. (I am located in Florida.)
