Five By Five Variations Workshop is Back! The workshop will be conducted in two Live Zoom sessions scheduled for June 16 and June 23 from 7-9 p.m. Eastern. (Check here to convert to your time zone.)
What’s Covered in the Workshop Sessions
Both sessions will be interactive and fun! I will be live in my studio over Zoom.
Session 1 – June 16, 7-9 p.m. Eastern: We will focus on selecting fabric and how to create your own unique variation. I will show you sample fabric combinations including an AfroModern print and how to use ombres. I’ll also share quilts by previous students to spark your imagination. there will be plenty of time for questions and answers. Following this session, you will start sewing up your blocks.
Session 2- June 23, 7-9 p.m. Eastern: Layouts and Variations! You will work with me in real time as I arrange and rearrange my own blocks to create variations. I’ll work with my African print blocks. Then you will have time to work on your layout and get help from me and other students in the class.
Five By Five Variations is a very modern pattern. It’s all straight seams–no Y seams, partial seams or curves in these blocks. It’s beginner friendly–and it provides fun opportunities to challenge yourself to create an improvisational layout with the blocks.
About The Pattern!
THE BLOCKS & THE LAYOUT
The pattern includes 5 blocks that you can arrange according to the layout in the pattern. OR…you can create a customized version in a number of ways.
- Lap size has a total of 25 blocks and crib size has a total of 16 blocks.
- You could vary the layout by adding unpieced negative space blocks.
- Arrange the 16 or 25 pieced blocks in your own unique layout
- Create a quilt using only 2 or 3 of the blocks instead of all 5 in the pattern
There are an UNLIMITED number of variations for this quilt! The pattern includes five modern blocks. You select which blocks you want to use — from one to all five.
During the workshop, you will create your own unique layout and even explore additional variations for future quilts. I’ll also demonstrate how you can create unique borders using leftover scraps and blocks.
Every quilt that you make with these blocks will be unique. And you will have fun learning about creating unique layouts that look improvisational even though it is based on a symmetrical grid.
