Stash Jazz

A COMBINATION Live class with video tutorials on the prework. The class will be a live session delivered over Zoom with access to a prerecorded video on fabric selection and tips and techniques to complete the project.

Every quilter has a stash of leftovers—orphan blocks, large scraps and even fat quarters of ‘ugly’ fabric. This workshop will help you make a dent in using some of this fabric to create a beautiful modern quilt. The pattern is based on two PIECED blocks. However, you start by improvisationally piecing your stash into complex looking but easy to piece block sections. No partial seams required. The quilt can be made in a scrappy version OR you can use a more coordinated set of scraps and orphan blocks in a selected color palette. I will also show how using a background color in the pieced blocks can create a completely different look for the quilt.

What the class includes:

  • 2 Quilt layouts
  • In the class, you will see me draw from a bag of random scraps real time and see how I use what I have to piece an improvisational block.
  • I’ll demo using orphan blocks including blocks with ‘mistakes’ in them!
  • I’ll demo how to select and place your improvisational blocks in the quilt layout.

Fibonacci #1

A Live Online class with lots of time for sewing and sharing your work with fellow students.   The class will be delivered live over Zoom from my studio with breaks for lunch and chocolate snacks (or your own favorite!).

This workshop is a surprisingly easy approach to modern quilting using just a few basic blocks.  Block sizes are based on the Fibonacci sequence, a number series common to many things in nature. Bring your creativity, but don’t worry about the math—I’ve done it all for you!

In addition to instructions for a full size quilt, I will also provide pattern layouts for making a smaller lapquilt, a set of placemats or a table runner using the same block.

In this workshop, students will:

  • Learn options for fabric selection and placement
  • Learn a fast way to improvisationally piece a center block as shown in this sample quilt
  • Develop confidence for intuitive design and piecing, alternate grid layouts, and negative space.

By the end of the class, you’ll leave with full instructions for completing the quilt top, the table runner or placemats, and suggestions for quilting your project.

Stop Hoarding Quilts –Find Homes

STOP HOARDING QUILTS! I know we talk about ‘collecting’ fabric and never using it.  I’ve blogged about that in the past. I sometimes hear quilters talk about al the quilts stored in their closets with no ‘forever’ home to [ …Continue Reading ]
